The Anchor of an Active Life: Charlie & Steffi P.’s Story

How the Charlie & Steffi made New Pond Village their home base for adventure, art and community.

When Charlie and Steffi P. first began thinking about their next chapter, Charlie brought out a favorite football metaphor: “We’re in the red zone, Stef,” he told his wife with a smile. Realizing it was time to make a proactive plan for retirement, they set out to explore senior living communities across the South Shore and Greater Boston area.

Their top priority was finding a vibrant environment close to their family and lifelong local roots—a search that led them straight to New Pond Village in Walpole, Massachusetts.

From the moment they arrived, they knew they had found something special. More than just a new home, they quickly learned that moving into a senior living community doesn’t mean leaving freedom behind. Independent Living at New Pond Village means having the freedom to live life your way, creating an active social lifestyle uniquely you and staying deeply connected to the people and places you love most.

Finding a “People Place” in Walpole

The search for a warm, welcoming community brought an immediate sense of relief when Charlie and Steffi first stepped onto the New Pond Village campus.

“This is a people place,” Charlie says. “Stef and I were largely impressed with the people here. They seemed genuine and encouraged us to come.”

Steffi felt the exact same warmth from day one. “The people here were so welcoming, and the associates were welcoming too,” she shares. “I can’t find a single thing to complain about!”

Old Friends and New Traditions

It didn’t take long for that initial welcome to blossom into a rich and active social life. In fact, over the past two and a half years, moving to Independent Living has expanded their social circle.

Their move even inspired longtime friends to join them at New Pond Village, including former Medfield neighbors (the Edgars) and friends from Plymouth (Sue and Ed Butler). Today, their weekly calendar stays happily full—from standing Wednesday night dinners with the Butlers to Saturday evening double-dates with fellow resident couples.

A Personal Sanctuary Filled with Memories

When they aren’t out sharing meals with friends, Charlie and Steffi retreat to an apartment home uniquely tailored to their personal style and passions. Living in The Ritz—New Pond Village’s spacious 1,011-square-foot three-bedroom floor plan—gives them all the room they need to make the space truly their own. Inside, they have curated a bright, open-concept layout that reflects a lifetime of art, family and shared history.

Their apartment home features a cozy den—the perfect quiet retreat for reading or catching up on emails—alongside an extra-large primary bedroom suite and plenty of space to comfortably host visiting family and guests.

Walk down their hallway, and you’ll see walls adorned with original paintings created by family, artist friends and original canvases painted by Steffi herself. Pride of place goes to a favorite photograph displayed in the hall: Charlie sailing across Buzzards Bay alongside his son and close friends as crew.

The Ultimate Home Base for Summer Freedom

Beyond offering a stylish personal sanctuary, their apartment home—complete with modern touches like stone countertops, wood flooring, in-unit laundry, walk-in closets and a private outdoor balcony—serves an even broader purpose. For Charlie and Steffi, it acts as the ultimate anchor for an active, low-maintenance lifestyle.

For decades, the couple have spent summers at their historic family home in Point Connet in Mattapoisett, MA, a seaside property Charlie’s father bought when Charlie was just two years old. Living at New Pond Village gives them total freedom to maintain that cherished tradition. They can simply lock up, spend full summers by the coast and seamlessly pop back to Walpole whenever needed for dentist appointments or Charlie’s local tennis matches. Without lawn care, building security or home maintenance to worry about, New Pond Village provides a completely worry-free foundation.

Daily Vitality and Creative Pursuits

That same sense of freedom extends to their time spent right on campus. Whenever they are settled in Walpole, daily life offers a diverse menu of engaging activities. Steffi stays active with on-site Chair Yoga and Stretch & Tone fitness classes, while creative workshops offer a fun way to try new hobbies.

Professional flower-arranging sessions with fresh local blooms and seasonal crafts are among her favorites. During a recent decoupage egg-decorating class taught by resident instructor Jean H., Steffi was so inspired that she gathered extra supplies to take down to Mattapoisett so her visiting granddaughters from London could create them, too.

Gaining Freedom

Whether enjoying a quiet morning or sharing dinner with longtime friends, Charlie and Steffi demonstrate that independent senior living is about gaining freedom, not giving it up.

Adventure lives here.
