It’s Never Too Late to Play: The Story Behind New Pond Village’s Happy Strummers

From ukulele strings to community sing-alongs, this resident-led group is bringing music, connection and joy to everyday life at New Pond Village.

When Trudy Walsh arrived at New Pond Village in 2023, she brought more than her belongings. She brought a lifelong love of music that began in childhood and never truly left her.

That passion was reignited years earlier after she read a 2015 article about a ukulele club at the Needham Senior Center. Curious, she visited the group with a friend and the experience left a lasting impression. Not long after, she helped launch a similar ukulele program in Dover, which remains active today.

From Inspiration to Community Impact

After becoming a resident at New Pond Village, Trudy continued to create opportunities for connection through music.

She founded a resident choir that rehearses weekly and hosts monthly sing-alongs that quickly became a favorite community tradition. These gatherings offered residents a chance to connect through familiar songs and shared joy.

But she was not finished.

The Happy Strummers Take Shape

In spring 2024, Trudy introduced a new idea: The Happy Strummers of NPV, a resident ukulele group designed to bring music and connection together in a new way.

What began as a simple concept quickly grew into a weekly gathering of eight residents learning, practicing and playing together.

With support from the Needham Music Store, residents were able to easily access instruments and get started regardless of experience.

Music That Reaches the Whole Community

The Happy Strummers do more than rehearse. They share their music across New Pond Village through themed monthly programs and regular performances in every neighborhood.

Their music brings energy and connection to  Independent Living Assisted Living and Memory Care neighborhoods. Holiday celebrations, in particular, have become even more meaningful, with familiar songs filling shared spaces.

A Culture of Creativity and Connection

The Happy Strummers reflect something larger happening at New Pond Village.

It is a place where curiosity is encouraged, and new experiences are always within reach. Residents continue to explore interests, share talents and build relationships through music, movement and everyday connection.

Experience the Joy of New Pond Village

From weekly rehearsals to community-wide performances, The Happy Strummers bring people together in ways that feel natural, uplifting and fun. It is a reminder that it is never too late to try something new and that sometimes the smallest instrument can create the biggest impact.

That same spirit carries throughout daily life at our community. Residents connect over movie nights, trivia and wine socials, stay active with tai chi, chair yoga and fitness classes, and continue learning through concerts, art classes and local outings. Aside from the Happy Strummers ukulele group, there are also a variety of other clubs and resident-led groups that make it easy to explore new interests and build lasting friendships.

It is a lifestyle shaped by connection, activity and discovery where every day offers something to look forward to.
