Patti Johnson: “I Would Be Lost Without My New Pond Family”
Long-time associate reflects on what’s special about working at the community
A Legacy of Dedication
If you look back over New Pond Village’s 30+ year history, you’ll find a few associates who’ve been there almost since the beginning. Dining Room Manager Patti Johnson is one of them. She started as a part-time server in the dining room 27 years ago.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but under Benchmark [Senior Living, New Pond Village’s owner since 2017], it’s been wonderful. They care about the employees and residents, and the changes they make are good ones. People stay around. That’s a great quality.”
Daily Connections with Residents
As dining room manager—a position she’s held for more than 20 years—Patti encounters nearly every resident, every day, whether they’re coming to eat in one of the dining venues or she’s preparing meals for at-home dining.
“We do a takeout program, and the past few months I’ve been writing positive messages on every single bag. I don’t care if there are 65 of them. I write on every single one, and the residents love that. It makes me feel so good to know they take the time to read it and they’re enjoying it.”
Elevating the Dining Experience
One of the most exciting changes Patti has seen at New Pond Village is the evolution of her department. The community has been dedicated to elevating the dining experience with renovations to the dining area and a culinary team led by an award-winning chef. Residents contribute as well, providing ideas via the dining committee.
“It’s important to hear their input. I talk with [Executive Chef] Lacey, we throw ideas back and forth based on my conversations with residents.”
Leading with Positivity
After 27 years, Patti has learned to handle challenges with a smile, whether it’s helping her team of servers balance work, school and sports or addressing a resident’s concern.
“I don’t make everybody happy every single day, but I try and spin off a positive to it. Next thing you know, we’re all feeling better.”

A True Sense of Family
That’s because people at New Pond Village treat each other like family, which is probably what Patti loves most about being a part of this community.
“We all get to know one another. Residents are interested in knowing about us as much as we are about them. I find that a lot of fun and rewarding. I love being here. I would be lost without my New Pond family.”
