Winter Safety Tips for Seniors

senior winter safety tips

As much as we try, we can’t wish winter away. At New Pond Village, we make safety a priority. Part of our maintenance-free lifestyle includes snow and ice removal. We regularly salt, light and maintain all walkways within the community to prevent slips and falls, especially during icy weather.

Here are some winter safety tips to help keep seniors safe when temperatures drop below freezing:

Walkway Maintenance

Prioritize walkway maintenance. Salt your paths and ensure proper lighting to prevent falls. Wear winter shoes or boots with good traction and if you use a cane, consider updating the tip for better stability.

Bundle Up

Layer up to stay warm! Hypothermia is more common in winter and seniors are especially vulnerable. Dress in layers, wearing one more than you think you’ll need. You can always remove a layer, but being too cold can be dangerous. Don’t forget mittens and a hat, as up to half of body heat is lost through the head.

Eating Healthy

Don’t forget to eat healthy. While your favorite seasonal fruits and vegetables may not be available, that doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a nutritious diet. Focus on foods rich in vitamin D and protein like grains, cheeses, tuna, salmon and orange juice.

At New Pond Village, we offer healthy, delicious cuisine designed to support residents’ well-being. Our dining options feature hearty soups, stews and wholesome entrees like grilled salmon and roasted turkey, providing essential nutrients to keep you warm and nourished.

Winterize Your Vehicle

Before the cold hits, check your car. Visit your mechanic for a tune-up, checking the oil, tires, battery, wipers and windshield fluid. You’ll be glad you did when the first snowstorm arrives.

Community Connections

Stay connected with neighbors. Team up with a friend or family member to check on each other during the winter months. It’s easy to stay indoors, but isolation and depression can become real concerns during this time. Keep in touch with the outside world to stay engaged and supported.

Continuing care retirement communities offer a variety of indoor activities for seniors to stay connected and entertained all year. At New Pond Village, some of our residents’ favorite activities include flower arranging, corn hole, billiards and ukulele club.

Emergency Preparedness

Stock up for emergencies. If a snowstorm hits, you might not be able to get out for a few days. Ensure you have enough bottled water, non-perishable food and a week’s supply of medication.
